How to Become a Game Tester

There are dozens of websites online that promise to teach one how to become a game tester. They swear that their
information is unlike the information that other sites provide, and that they will provide secret tips and tricks – for a
price. These sites often charge a large amount of money in order to teach you things that you can learn on your
own. Here are the steps that you can take in order to live out your fantasy and become a game tester.

Read the Gaming Industry News

The first thing that you have to do if you want to be a game tester is to become aware of what is going on in the
world of technology. Companies that make games will often “leak” the news to the media about a new game a year
or so before the game is actually put on shelves. Part of the reason for this is to build up hype about the game, but
the other part of this is to recruit testers. Companies that make games take in billions of dollars a year doing so, and
the last thing they want is for the consumers to be unhappy about the game and ask for a refund. Because of this,
they pay people to test their games for them, in order to make sure that there are free of bugs and to test the
functionality and playability of the game.

Pick a Game Specialty

A professional game tester is willing and able to test almost any new product that comes out on the market, but
before you become a professional game tester, you will need to break into the business. This is often done by
becoming an expert on one specific type of game or gaming system. If, for instance, you love playing role playing
games, make sure the company that you want to work for knows that you have played a huge number of different
types of role playing games. This way they can be assured that you know exactly what you’re talking about and that
you know what to look for when it comes to a good role playing game.

Join Gaming Boards

There are hundreds of different types of gaming forums available to join on the internet. Join some! The best ones
to join are those that compliment your chosen specialty, but you may also want to join gaming boards that are linked
directly to a company as well. Often the company will “leak” information onto these gaming boards in order to see
how excited people are about the games. If you’ve been around long enough and your name becomes known, you
can contact the company and pitch to them the idea of your testing games for them.

There are dozens of different ways you can go about working in the gaming world, and being a game tester is only
one. Some, for instance, go to college and study programming, while others start from the bottom up, testing games
and learning their trade as they go along. If you are seriously interested in the industry, you should do some
homework so that you can become a game tester.
