What Are the Different Game Tester Requirements?
There are a number of different jobs available for game testers, and each one has its own game tester
requirements. Most people know that video game companies hire game testers to make sure that their games work
flawlessly before they hit the stores, but did you realize that there are a number of different jobs a video game tester
can take? What is required of you depends on what type of position you have.
Game Tester Requirements for Working With the Programmers
Some video game testers work directly with the programmers. They are often given small tasks during the first
phase of testing in order to make sure that what the programmer is doing is working correctly. Testers that work
directly with the programmers generally have some input as to how the game comes out. They often aren’t able to
change the storyline, but they are asked what they think of a particular scene or aspect of game play. The
programmer takes their opinion under advice and uses it to help create the best game possible.
In order to work with the programmers, testers generally have to either have attended college, specializing in
programming, graphic design, or something similar, or they had to have worked for the company for a significant
amount of time. Those that work directly with the programmers need to be viewed as trustworthy and knowledgeable.
Game Tester Requirements for Final Testers and Reviewers
There are two different types of testers that work after the main programming has been done. The first type of game
tester is supposed to do the final check for glitches and are also supposed to make sure that the game is playable
by regular people. For this reason they are often separated from the programmers. If the game is a strategy game,
the company wants to make sure that the game is playable, but not too easy. If it’s a fighting game, they want to
make sure that it is fun, but not too difficult to play.
The other type of tester works for the review companies. They get a copy of the game before it goes onto the
shelves and are supposed to play the game in order to see if it’s a good game or a not so good game. They look at
the game critically, picking apart the graphics, soundtrack and every other part of the game. These are the types of
testers that make the reviews before the game comes out. They are very important because their reviews are what
help people to decide whether to purchase, or not purchase, the new game.
Video game testers are a vital piece of the game creation. They help make the game better in a number of different
ways, from helping the programmer to making sure that it is perfect before it goes out, to writing the reviews. The
game tester requirements truly depend upon what branch of testing you want to go into!
