How to Write a Game Tester Resume

A number of people believe that they would like to test video games and wonder what they should include on a
game tester resume. They don’t know if there are specific requirements that it takes to be a game tester, or what
the hiring committee is looking for when they consider an applicant. The type of game tester resume you should
write depends on the type of game tester you want to be.

Reviewing Games

Some game testers play the games before they hit the market for the publicists. They want to assure that the game
is playable, and that it lives up to the hype that the game creator has given it. If you would like to try to work for a
publicist in order to review game, you need to have a strong literary and writing background. Many testers that work
for publicists and reviewers graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English and have written a number of reviews
before. A game tester resume for publicists should include all of the education you have achieved, as well as copies
of your best reviews or published works.

Working with Programmers

Other game testers work directly with the programmers. They take their orders from the game creators and might do
menial tasks on a day to day basis, like taking the character into every body of water to make sure that it can swim.
These game testers often find themselves helping the programmers to make the games better, so a strong
background in computer programming or any type of computer language is a plus. A resume for someone who
wants to work with programmers should include information about their formal training in computer programming, as
well as any informal training that they have done on their own.

Beta Testing

The majority of game testers are beta testers. This means that they get a copy of the game when the programmers
believe it is done and before it is ready to hit the stores. They often have to play the game all the way through,
making down what parts work and what doesn’t and giving a general description of whether they liked the game or
not. Beta testers can get a job working with a game company with little experience, but often they will have to work in
an unpaid capacity before they are able to get a paying position with the game company. A resume for a beta tester
should include all of the education, any specialty classes that you’ve taken and detailed information about the types
of games you play and how long you’ve played them.

It is possible to make a good living being a game tester, but it depends on which branch you choose to go into. Most
beta testers do not stay in that position for forever, but instead choose to move up and work with programmers
because the pay is more. Just remember to write your game tester resume so that it truly shows the person
reviewing it who you are and what you can do.
